Kenya’s leading electric vehicle (EV) maker Opibus has changed its name to ROAM. The company was among the earliest entrants into the local electric vehicle manufacturing sector which has now attracted players such as BasiGo, Kiri, Nopea Ride, EVM Africa, Caetano, and Agilitee Africa.

Filip Lovstrom, CEO, ROAM: “This is more than a name change, it’s a milestone that brings us closer to realizing our ambition as leaders in providing electric mobility solutions and energy systems for the African region. It is exciting to see how far we have come and forging forward, it is even more thrilling seeing there are endless possibilities to what we can achieve in Africa.”

The company set shop in 2017 with a focus on the public service vehicles market. Besides the construction of electric motorcycles, they are also transforming combustion engines to EV motors. The recent launch of the first all-electric bus is a major milestone for the company that has its eyes in the larger African market.

ROAM employs nearly 100 experts in various fields. Products under the new brand name include; Roam Motorcycles, Roam transit (buses), Roam Energy, Charging and Muse (conversions for the Mining, Utility and Safari segment).

In November last year, the company raised US$7.5 million in equity and grant funding, the largest ever in an electric mobility company in Sub-Saharan Africa.
